Waterloo’s Cabin Coffee journey started when Norma and Matt Schiller were looking for an investment opportunity. They looked into several different possibilities, but nothing seemed to fit their goals. They wanted something that would be enjoyable, provide some sort of service in the community, and of course be profitable. Norma and Matt were discouraged that they could not seem to find something to fit those 3 categories, and then along came Cabin Coffee. Various groups of people that Norma and Matt knew were impressed with the product and there was never any negative feelings. When they heard there was franchise opportunities without any notice Matt “cold-called” Brad Barber at the Clear Lake store. That was the beginning.
Matt and Norma quickly were impressed with the business model, but now had the major step of deciding on a location for a store. Matt’s sister Rachel Schiller-Gillespie was disenchanted with her job as a Nurse, Matt decided to invite her to Clear Lake to visit the store. Rachel came from Waterloo, was impressed with the store, and after some deliberation concluded that she was willing to make this career change. It is a remarkable story that with absolutely no background in food service, management, or retail, with Brad and Angie’s help, Rachel has managed all areas of her store from the very first day. Matt and Rachel’s proudest moment was the look on their mother’s face when the store opened, and she realized just how far the store (and Rachel) had come. Matt, Norma, and Rachel definitely found the right company to satisfy our 3 goals, and are really thankful to be associated with Cabin Coffee.
